Depropanizer Distillation Tower Simulation with Aspen Plus

Introduction

Distillation tower or separation tower is a device that when a solution with different components such as oil is poured into it, its components are separated based on the difference in the boiling point of its components. This tower is built in two small laboratory scale and large industrial scale in refineries. The laboratory type is made of glass for small amounts of material. But the industrial type is prepared for petrochemical processes, oil, natural gas, fermentation and coal tar process. The most important use of the distillation tower in the oil industry is to separate its various hydrocarbons based on volatility, because crude oil is a complex mixture of several components. Heavier hydrocarbon has a high boiling point and light hydrocarbon with a low boiling point leaves the tower sooner.

Description of the Process

To perform the simulation, we go to the simulation environment and draw the desired flow sheet, which has two modes:

First mode: Distillation tower simulation

The second mode: flash calculations performed on the flow and its outputs

Then we run it by giving the operating conditions and the input flow and the data of the distillation tower.

Conclusion

Distillation is one of the most common processes of separating a mixture of two (or more) components back to its original state by heating the mixture to a temperature between their respective boiling points. In fact, fractional (or fractional) distillation is done by applying and removing heat in order to separate liquid from liquid.
