Ammonia Absorption Chiller Simulation with Aspen Plus

Introduction

Ammonia absorption chillers are recognized as an efficient and sustainable solution for HVAC systems and industrial processes. These chillers operate using thermal energy rather than electrical energy to generate cooling, making them an attractive option for reducing energy consumption and operational costs. Simulating these systems using software such as Aspen Plus enables precise analysis of their performance. In this project, Aspen Plus is used to examine and analyze all the parameters influencing the performance of an ammonia absorption chiller. The objective of this simulation is to optimize processes and enhance chiller efficiency under various operational conditions.

Description

A steady-state simulation model of a commercial 3-ton ammonia/water absorption chiller was developed and validated using Aspen Plus. First, a suitable thermodynamic property model for the ammonia/water liquid mixture was selected. The simulation results showed good agreement with literature data at a coolant air temperature of 35°C.

This simulation project is based on data from the referenced article, and the results closely align with those presented within it.

Conclusion

This research demonstrates that simulating ammonia absorption chillers with Aspen Plus provides an effective tool for analyzing and optimizing the performance of these cooling systems. The simulation results indicate that by adjusting various parameters—such as temperature, pressure, and feed ratios—chiller efficiency can be significantly enhanced, leading to reduced energy consumption.

The study also highlights technical and operational challenges in designing and operating ammonia absorption chillers and emphasizes the need for further research on optimizing these systems. Given the rising demand for sustainable, low-energy solutions in industries, ammonia absorption chillers present a strategic and effective option for improving HVAC performance in the future.

The simulation was conducted in Aspen Plus, fully aligning with the study’s operational conditions.
